The Influence of Media in Politics
by Roselle D. Quiao
The thing that I hate most about politics would be the fact that it always involves the media. From news reports to commercials, it’s always a trend every presidential elections season. Since the Filipinos are known to be musically inclined by culture, that’s how politicians market their credentials to the public; and that my friends is what you call media brainwashing by politics.
In the previous election, we can all remember the “Naging Mahirap” campaign song of Manny Villar that became controversial to the point that made a lot of people get annoyed once the first few notes start playing. It’s not even a big deal if it receives a bad impression in the long run, for politics; as long as everyone is aware of it then it’s splendid. ‘Cause truth be told, even if it’s bad publicity, it’s still considered as publicity nevertheless. It can be assumed that Mr. Villar’s budget mainly composed of the advertising expenses because for one, commercials are paid by the duration and two, airing time. After the outcome of the presidential elections, Mr. Villar’s efforts and money were to put to waste mainly because of Benigno Cojuangco-Aquino III and his sister’s reputation.
Besides the fact that the Cojuangco-Aquino family are known for their power in the government and business area, it is not doubt that they also have power in the media. Kris Aquino is the sister of the current president and is also known as the queen of media. An influential person recognized by ABS-CBN. Also when this controversial video about the Cojuangco-Aquino family went viral, the said channel did not expose this to the public because she was part of them.
Speaking of the video entitled “Aquino Cojuangco: Facts they don’t want you to know”, it also presents on how people can influence others with the use of media against the Cojuangco Aquino political dynasty. However this still revolves around politics and just like what I mentioned earlier in the article, good or bad publicity is still publicity.
